Omaha police officers on Tuesday fatally shot a woman who they allege kidnapped a young boy and slashed him with a large knife outside a Walmart store. The incident unfolded after the suspect approached a female shopper and a 2- or 3-year-old boy inside the retailer, displaying a knife and taking control of the child in what authorities described as an act of kidnapping.
Details of the Disturbing Kidnapping and Attack
Deputy Chief Scott Gray stated that the suspect instructed the woman to walk ahead of the shopping cart, while she followed with the child held at knifepoint. The group exited the store and proceeded down a driveway, where the two women engaged in a verbal altercation for several minutes until police arrived on the scene.
Police Response and Fatal Shooting
Officers responded to a 911 call and issued commands to the suspect upon arrival. At that point, the woman began swiping the knife at the child, cutting him across the face. At least one officer fired at the suspect, resulting in her death at the location. Body-worn camera footage released by police shows the woman raising a knife over the young boy, who was seated in a shopping cart, as an officer aimed a firearm at her.
Child's Condition and Investigation
The child received treatment at a hospital for a significant laceration on the left side of his face and a hand injury. He is expected to survive, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Gray confirmed that the two women did not know each other, and the relationship between the boy and his caretaker has not been established.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance video from the store, and the event appears to be an isolated incident. The Walmart was largely empty as police continued their investigation. Gray noted that the actions inside the store were not overtly suspicious, with the group walking out casually, so other shoppers likely did not perceive them as suspects.
