Officers Targeted in Violent Confrontation

Police in Northern Ireland are treating a violent incident in Londonderry, where officers were attacked with a knife, as attempted murder. The attack occurred during the early hours of Thursday, 27 November 2025, in the Collon Lane area of the city.

Details of the Attack Emerge

According to Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton, officers were at a property conducting enquiries related to a wanted person. A man at the property became aggressive, striking one officer in the face and causing a bloodied nose. When police attempted to arrest the suspect inside the flat, they had to deploy Pava spray due to his violent behaviour.

The suspect then produced a knife and attempted to stab an officer in the torso. Mr Singleton stated that the officer's protective body equipment prevented a far more serious outcome. During the struggle to detain this suspect, another officer suffered a stab wound to the leg and required medical treatment, including stitches.

Second Suspect Arrested

Officers then entered the kitchen of the flat and located a second man, aged 20, who was wanted for a breach of bail. This individual struck out at two officers with his hand. After being detained, he spat on an officer's glasses. He was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences.

Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations into the serious assault continue.
