New Zealand police have escalated a desperate nationwide search for a father who disappeared with his three children, now fearingly suspecting he is being actively aided by accomplices to stay hidden.
The intense manhunt centres on Tom Phillips, who vanished with his young children, Jayda, Maverick, and Ember, over two years ago. Authorities believe he and the children are still alive and likely residing in remote wilderness areas, but their ability to evade one of the country's most extensive searches suggests organised, external support.
A Pattern of Disappearances
Phillips and his children were originally reported missing from their home in the small, rural community of Marokopa in December 2021. In a bizarre twist, they reappeared unscathed several weeks later, only for Phillips to vanish with them once again in March 2022, from which point they have not been seen.
Detective Inspector Will Loughrin, leading the investigation, stated the police assessment has shifted significantly. "We believe there are people who are knowingly assisting Tom Phillips," he revealed, emphasising this outside help is a "key factor" in his ability to remain at large.
The Strain of a Prolonged Search
The case has consumed immense police resources and cast a long shadow over the local Waikato community. The children's mother and wider family have endured what officials describe as an "incredibly difficult and stressful time," clinging to hope for a safe return.
Police have followed over 120 leads, conducted numerous land and aerial searches of the rugged, bush-clad region, and executed several search warrants. A substantial reward of NZ$80,000 remains on offer for information that leads to the location and safe return of the children.
A Plea for Public Assistance
Authorities are making a direct public appeal, urging anyone with information—no matter how insignificant it may seem—to come forward. They are particularly keen to hear from those who may have provided assistance in the past, even unwittingly, but now wish to do the right thing.
Inspector Loughrin made a heartfelt plea directly to Phillips himself, urging him to make contact and provide a sign that the children are safe and well. The New Zealand police remain determined but acknowledge the frustrating lack of breakthrough leads in this complex and emotionally charged case.
