Channel 5 News Accused of Racist Culture in Employment Tribunal
Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije, a former presenter at Channel 5 News, has made explosive allegations against the broadcaster, claiming it harbours a toxic culture of racism, sexism, misogyny, and bullying. The 47-year-old journalist is set to face her former co-anchor Dan Walker in a four-day employment tribunal hearing in London next week.
Details of the Allegations and Legal Proceedings
Ms Vanderpuije has named Dan Walker, ITN (the producer of Channel 5 News), and Paramount (the owner of Channel 5) as respondents to her claims. According to her lawyer, Jonathan Coad, she alleges that she was subjected to a sham redundancy after blowing the whistle on the discriminatory environment within the newsroom.
In a statement issued on her behalf, Mr Coad asserted: Claudia-Liza claims that she was the victim of a sham redundancy because as a whistleblower she made protected disclosures alleging that a toxic culture of racism, sexism, misogyny and bullying existed in the Channel 5 Newsroom, and that its editorial content reflected its racist culture.
The statement further accuses ITN and Channel 5 of attempting to cover up the racist culture, alleging they tolerated it despite breaching statutory obligations. Ms Vanderpuije has stated she is legally constrained from commenting further until the trial.
Dan Walker's Response and Character Witnesses
Dan Walker, 49, a former BBC Breakfast host and devout Christian, has vehemently denied all allegations. He has gathered more than 50 character witness statements from a diverse group including footballers, Olympians, BBC journalists, presenters, and other colleagues to support his defence.
A source close to Walker told The Mail on Sunday: Dan absolutely denies any sexism, misogyny, racism or bullying. It has been hanging over him for some years now. Nobody wants this but he will be there to tell the truth. The source added that Walker has been stunned and actually very upset by the accusations.
Background and Previous Investigation
Ms Vanderpuije departed Channel 5 in 2023 after five years as a presenter, with the last 12 months spent co-anchoring alongside Walker. Her claims follow a workplace probe in April 2024 into serious misconduct involving Walker, which resulted in him being completely exonerated due to a lack of evidence.
Sources familiar with that inquiry indicated it related to Ms Vanderpuije's complaints, but none were upheld. Walker commented in 2024: That was fully investigated and I was entirely vindicated by an independent inquiry.
Statements from Involved Parties
Both Walker and Ms Vanderpuije have declined to comment further ahead of the tribunal. ITN issued a brief statement: This claim, which is denied in full, will be addressed through the tribunal process. The upcoming hearing is expected to delve into the detailed allegations and witness testimonies, potentially revealing significant insights into the workplace culture at Channel 5 News.
