A murder investigation is underway in Leeds after a man died following an alleged assault at a tower block on New Year's Day. West Yorkshire Police were called to Gargrave Court in the Burmantofts area in the early hours of 1 January 2026.

Emergency Response and Arrest

Officers received a report of suspicious circumstances at the location at 8.14am. Upon arrival, they discovered a man lying on the floor with serious injuries. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Following immediate enquiries at the scene, detectives arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody for questioning. The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team has taken charge of the investigation.

Appeal for Witnesses

Detective Inspector Jodie Hayes, leading the inquiry, acknowledged the incident would cause concern locally. "An investigation is underway to establish how the deceased came to lose his life," she stated.

Reassurance Patrols

In response to community concerns, neighbourhood policing teams have increased patrols in the Burmantofts area. DI Hayes encouraged residents to speak directly with these officers if they have any worries. "Neighbourhood officers are patrolling the area to provide reassurance for residents," she confirmed.

The death marks a tragic start to the new year for the city of Leeds, with a major police investigation now focused on the events at the Gargrave Court tower block.
