Murder Investigation Launched After De Montfort University Student Fatally Stabbed
Leicestershire Police have initiated a murder investigation following the fatal stabbing of a De Montfort University student in Leicester city centre. The victim, a man in his twenties, succumbed to his injuries at Leicester Royal Infirmary on Tuesday evening after an altercation near the university campus.
Police Response and Arrest
Officers were dispatched to Oxford Street, close to the junction with Bonners Lane, at approximately 5pm on Tuesday following reports of a collapsed man. Upon arrival, it was confirmed the individual had suffered stab wounds. Despite rapid transportation to hospital and the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
An 18-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Lorna Granville stated that initial inquiries suggest the victim was involved in a confrontation with another man in the street prior to the attack.
University and Community Reaction
De Montfort University Vice-Chancellor Professor Katie Normington expressed profound sorrow, confirming the tragic death of one of their students. "We are devastated," she said. "Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by what has happened. We are offering direct support to students, staff and the family of the victim."
The university is collaborating closely with Leicestershire Police as the investigation progresses. Professor Normington also thanked the Leicester community for their messages of support, noting the city's resilience in difficult times.
Witness Accounts and Police Appeal
A DMU student, who wished to remain anonymous, described witnessing the aftermath. "I just saw a person on the floor and getting CPR," the student recounted. "I was going back home then I just saw the police around and saw the person on the floor." The student observed the man lying on the pavement opposite The Bowling Green pub.
Detective Inspector Granville has issued a public appeal for information:
- Witnesses who came to the victim's aid before emergency services arrived
- Motorists who were driving along Oxford Street around 5pm with potential dashcam footage
- Anyone with information about the confrontation between two men
Police are reviewing CCTV from the area and conducting reassurance patrols. Several roads remain closed as the investigation continues, causing significant disruption around Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Emergency Services and Local Impact
East Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at 5.03pm on Tuesday, deploying multiple resources including a paramedic in an ambulance car, three crewed ambulances, and an air ambulance responder.
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has warned patients to expect travel disruption and allow extra time for appointments due to ongoing road closures. Councillor Liz Sahu, speaking on behalf of Castle ward colleagues, expressed deep concern about the incident and other recent worrying events in the city, pledging to discuss these matters with police.
