A mother suspected of killing two of her children in the United States has been extradited from the United Kingdom to face justice in Colorado.
Transatlantic Manhunt and Arrest
Kimberlee Singler, 37, was arrested at a hotel in London's Chelsea district on December 30, 2023. This came just over a week after the bodies of her nine-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son were discovered in their Colorado Springs home on December 19, 2023. Her 11-year-old daughter was found injured but survived the attack.
Singler, who had superficial knife wounds, initially told police that an intruder was responsible. The surviving child initially supported this claim. However, authorities grew suspicious and sought an arrest warrant for Singler on December 26, 2023, after the girl reportedly changed her story. By that time, Singler had already fled the US.
Legal Battle Against Extradition
Singler fought her extradition from the UK, a process that concluded when she was formally handed over to US authorities on December 23, 2025. Her defence in London was led by prominent human rights lawyer Edward Fitzgerald, who argued that Colorado's mandatory life sentence without parole for first-degree murder violated European human rights standards.
This legal challenge was rejected by a judge at Westminster Magistrates' Court in January 2025, and a subsequent appeal was denied in November. The FBI and Colorado Springs police then travelled to London to take her into custody.
Chilling Details of the Case
According to UK court documents, the surviving daughter later told an investigator that her mother said 'God made her do it'. Police also found significant inconsistencies in Singler's account of an intruder. They reported finding no footprints in the snow leading to the patio door she claimed the attacker used.
The tragedy unfolded amid a bitter custody dispute. A judge had ordered Singler just a day before the children were found to comply with a previous order allowing the father to have the children for the holidays. She was told to either hand them over or bring them to a court hearing scheduled for December 20, 2023.
On the day of that hearing, Singler filed a motion to delay it, stating she and her children had been attacked and two were murdered. She asked for time to grieve. Police, however, stated GPS records showed the children's father was driving a truck approximately 80 miles away at the time of the killings.
Singler now faces a series of serious charges in Colorado, including two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, three counts of child abuse, and one count of assault. The surviving child, now 13, is expected to be a key witness at any future trial.
Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez stated the extradition marked a 'significant milestone' in the investigation, describing the alleged acts as 'unthinkable'. Kimberlee Singler is being held in custody pending a preliminary hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence for a trial.
