A single mother of three has been identified as the woman who was allegedly killed outside her home by her neighbour, with his teenage daughter reportedly present during the incident. Melonie McKay, 53, was allegedly struck by a utility vehicle in the driveway of her Seston Street home in Reservoir, located in Melbourne's north, shortly after 7:30 PM on Friday evening.
Neighbour Charged with Murder Following Alleged Deliberate Act
Neighbour Luke Rainey, 44, was subsequently charged with murder and refused bail when he appeared in court on Saturday. Police allege that Rainey deliberately ran down the mother-of-three following a neighbourhood dispute that escalated tragically. It is understood that his teenage daughter was also in the vehicle at the time of the alleged incident, according to reports from the Herald Sun.
Family Members Express Devastation and Numbness
Ms McKay's home remained an active crime scene on Saturday, where devastated family members broke their silence about the profound loss. Her son Trent told reporters that he felt completely 'numb' in the wake of his mother's sudden death. 'I don't know what to do or feel - I had a cry with my younger sister,' he expressed emotionally.
Ms McKay's sister added that the mum-of-three had 'meant the world' to her children and extended family. 'As a single parent, she knew unwavering strength and dedication in caring for her daughter, who faced severe mental health challenges,' she stated. 'Her love and resilience in the face of adversity were truly inspiring. The loss of her life to violence has been absolutely devastating, not just to us, but especially to her three children, they've lost a mother who was their constant source of strength, love, and guidance.'
Community Support Through Fundraising Initiative
A GoFundMe page has been established to raise funds for the funeral expenses, highlighting the community's response to the tragedy. 'My cousin was the most caring and beautiful person who did not deserve to lose her life,' Carly McKay wrote on the fundraising platform. 'Her three beautiful children are now left without their mum. I would really appreciate any donation to help lay my beautiful cousin to rest.' It is understood that the mother-of-three had resided at the Seston Street address for approximately fifteen years prior to the incident.
Court Appearance and Legal Proceedings
During his court appearance via videolink, Rainey is reported to have looked depressed and solemn throughout the proceedings. 'I got two kids,' he was heard saying during the hearing. Rainey did not apply for bail and will remain in custody until his next scheduled court appearance on July 1. The crime scene at the home featured a utility vehicle covered with police tape, underscoring the severity of the alleged act.
