A deranged man allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's home and attempted to murder her son, according to police. Robert Schreiber, 42, is accused of entering the New York residence and repeatedly stabbing his ex's 22-year-old son, as stated in a press release from the Suffolk County Police Department.
Relationship Breakdown Leads to Violence
Schreiber's long-term girlfriend ended their relationship on April 17 and locked him out of her home on Marvin Street in Patchogue, a town on Long Island. The following morning at 8 a.m., Schreiber allegedly invaded the home through an unlocked window while everyone inside was asleep.
Attack and Rescue
Schreiber allegedly burst into the victim's room and stabbed him seven times, nearly killing him. The victim's name has not been released. Family members in the home managed to stop Schreiber and call 911, allowing the 22-year-old to escape down the stairs. Suffolk County Police officers arrived and rushed the victim to NYU Langone Hospital, where he was treated for his stab wounds.
Police arrested Schreiber and found him in possession of the knife he allegedly used in the attack.
Charges and Bail
The 42-year-old faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, burglary, assault, weapons possession, child endangerment, and harassment. He is being held on $100,000 cash bail, $1,000,000 bond, or a $1,000,000 partially secured bond while the case is pending. Schreiber is due back in court on May 28, 2026, and faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
District Attorney Tierney said: 'This was a violent attack on a young man in his own home. Domestic violence does not always end when a relationship does, it often escalates. We will aggressively prosecute this defendant and seek justice for the victim and his family.'

This follows another fatal stabbing at a fast food chain on Long Island. Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera, 22, was taken into custody on Saturday after turning himself in over the deaths of his 32-year-old roommate and 42-year-old coworker, Ana Maria del Aguila-Cordova. Aguila-Cordova was found outside an Island Park Wendy's, where she and Rivera worked, at around 12:30 a.m. on Friday after taking out the trash. The second victim, unidentified, was found stabbed to death in her home in Valley Stream, having lived in the same apartment building as Rivera. Her body was discovered shortly after 3 a.m. on Friday, believed to have been killed around 9 p.m. on Thursday night.
