Dramatic Overnight Rescue in Manchester City Centre
Emergency services launched a major operation in the heart of Manchester during the early hours of Sunday morning after a man fell into the River Medlock. The incident occurred at approximately 2am on Saturday, November 18, on Charles Street, a location known for its proximity to popular nightlife venues including Factory 251, Joshua Brooks, YES, and the Lass O'Gowrie pub.
Swift Emergency Response
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) rushed to the scene with multiple fire engines following the emergency call. Firefighters deployed specialist equipment, including a crane and a turntable ladder, to reach the man who had fallen into the shallow river. The operation was a success, with crews managing to bring the individual to safety.
The rescued man sustained only minor injuries and was subsequently handed over to the care of North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) for further assessment and treatment. The entire rescue was documented by GMFRS, who later shared photographs of the dramatic operation on their official Facebook page.

In a social media statement, a GMFRS spokesperson commended the collaborative effort, stating: "Great partnership working on display to rescue a young man who fell into a shallow river on Charles Street in the city centre at 2am." The fire service also extended thanks to Greater Manchester Police and local security staff for their assistance in managing the incident in what was described as a very busy area.
This successful rescue stands in stark contrast to a separate incident days earlier where fire crews in Merseyside were targeted with fireworks while tackling a balcony fire at Knowsley Heights on Primrose Drive. In that event, a female police officer suffered a minor leg injury, with Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton condemning the "disgraceful" behaviour.
