A man in his 80s has died after being struck by a police vehicle responding to an emergency call in central London. The incident occurred at approximately 6.30pm on Thursday, October 2, on Lambeth Palace Road.
Despite the efforts of paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, who treated the elderly pedestrian at the scene, he later died in hospital. The police vehicle was on an emergency call at the time of the collision.
The Metropolitan Police's Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been informed, as is standard practice. The IOPC has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
IOPC director Emily Barry expressed condolences to the man's family and urged witnesses to come forward. “The collision happened on a busy road in London in the early evening when people are likely to have been travelling. We would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward and report what they saw,” she said.
Witnesses are asked to contact IOPC investigators by calling 0300 303 5588 or emailing [email protected].
