Former professional footballer Joey Barton finds himself behind bars tonight after being remanded into custody for allegedly battering a man during a violent altercation at a golf club. The 43-year-old ex-Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers midfielder stands accused of attacking married father-of-two Kevin Lynch, aged 51, at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Liverpool on Sunday evening.
Court Appearance and Charges
Barton, who resides in Widnes, Cheshire, appeared before a judge at Liverpool Magistrates Court this afternoon, where he spoke only to confirm his name and address. Dressed in a blue half-zip sweater and grey jogging bottoms, the former footballer was denied bail by District Judge James Hatton. He faces charges alongside his 50-year-old friend Gary O'Grady, a roofer from Huyton, Merseyside, who was granted bail to appear before Liverpool Crown Court next month.
Alleged Assault Details
Both men are accused of assaulting Mr Lynch, occasioning grievous bodily harm (GBH). The court heard that all three individuals had been drinking at the clubhouse when a heated argument developed between Barton and Mr Lynch at the bar. Chelsea Kearns, prosecuting, revealed that CCTV footage showed Barton appearing to gesture to Mr Lynch to go outside before leaving the premises, with Mr Lynch following approximately one minute later.
Ms Kearns described how a woman heard shouting outside the golf club, including a male voice repeatedly shouting "Stop, stop." Witnesses reportedly observed two men taking turns to punch, kick, and stamp on a bald man who was lying on the ground. Another witness claimed to have heard one of the alleged perpetrators tell Mr Lynch he "should've behaved."
Victim's Condition and Investigation
Neighbours reported hearing a man groaning in pain and seeing pools of blood on the street before paramedics arrived at the scene. A substantial police presence was deployed to the location, with forensic officers cordoning off the club and thoroughly searching the grounds for evidence. Mr Lynch was transported to hospital with significant facial and rib injuries, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
The court heard disturbing details about the potential severity of Mr Lynch's injuries, including the possibility of "permanent, irreversible injury" with doctors uncertain whether he might lose sight in one eye. Merseyside Police confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that Barton has been formally charged with Section 18 wounding with intent.
Background of Those Involved
All three men involved in the incident are registered members of Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. Mr Lynch, who has managed several non-league football clubs including Prescot Cables FC, Marine AFC, and City of Liverpool FC, is also the founder and headteacher of NexGen Academy, a Liverpool school for children with additional needs.
Barton, who earned one England cap during his career and played for Newcastle United, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille among other clubs, has also managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. Earlier on Tuesday, the same day as his court appearance, Barton was ordered to pay £300,000 to former England footballer Eni Aluko after she successfully sued him for libel.
Separate Legal Proceedings
Former England footballer and television pundit Ms Aluko brought legal action against Barton over two posts he made in 2024 on social media platform X. Gervase de Wilde, representing Ms Aluko, told the High Court that Barton had wrongly claimed she had "cynically sought to exploit her status as an alleged victim of racism and bullying" and that she was a hypocrite.
The barrister revealed that between January and August 2024, Barton published 48 posts relating to Ms Aluko on his X account, describing the activity as "a deliberately targeted public campaign of vilification." One particularly disturbing post included an image of Ms Aluko's head superimposed onto serial killer Rosemary West's body.
Mr de Wilde stated: "The campaign amounted to an attack on multiple aspects of her life and personality. Mr Barton's campaign caused Ms Aluko enormous distress. When she sought to defend herself against Mr Barton's conduct, and that of his followers, he criticised and attacked her for doing so."
According to a court order, Barton has been instructed to pay £339,000 in total, with the first £100,000 plus interest due by March 24. Barton did not attend this hearing, with Mr de Wilde informing the court that he "was arrested yesterday and is currently being held in custody" in relation to the golf club assault allegations.
The case continues as Barton remains in custody awaiting his next appearance before Liverpool Crown Court next month, while his co-accused Gary O'Grady has been released on bail pending further proceedings.
