Volusia County in Florida is preparing to implement strict measures against social media users who promote unsanctioned 'takeover' events during the spring break period. Sheriff Michael Chitwood has announced that authorities will pursue civil lawsuits against these promoters, with the aim of seizing their assets to address public safety concerns.
Enforcement of Special Event Zones
From Friday, a 'special event zone' will be enforced, granting police the authority to issue higher traffic fines and impose additional penalties. This move comes in response to recent incidents, including heavy traffic and large crowds, particularly involving juveniles, in New Smyrna Beach, which marked the busiest day of spring break so far.
Recent Arrests and Clarifications
Last weekend, Volusia County police arrested 133 individuals and seized six weapons. Sheriff Chitwood also refuted social media rumours of a shooting on Daytona Beach, emphasising the need for accurate information and responsible behaviour during the holiday season.
The crackdown aims to prevent chaos and ensure that spring break activities remain safe and orderly, as law enforcement works to manage the influx of visitors and maintain public order in the region.
