A driver who struck and killed a four-year-old girl as she walked home from Eid celebrations with her family has been handed a prison sentence. Javonnie Tavener, aged 23, was sentenced today at court following the tragic incident in Birmingham in April 2024.

Mayar Yahia was pronounced dead at the scene after Tavener's vehicle collided with her and her mother just feet from their home. The young girl had been returning from Eid festivities with her family when the crash occurred, resulting in her untimely death.
Tavener previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving for hitting Mayar with his car. He also admitted to two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving, as two other individuals sustained serious injuries in the same collision.
