Driver Sentenced for Fatal Crash That Killed Four-Year-Old Girl
A driver who struck and killed a four-year-old girl as she walked home from Eid celebrations with her family has been handed a prison sentence. Javonnie Tavener, aged 23, was sentenced today at court following the tragic incident in Birmingham in April 2024.
Details of the Fatal Collision
Mayar Yahia was pronounced dead at the scene after Tavener's vehicle collided with her and her mother just feet from their home. The young girl had been returning from Eid festivities with her family when the crash occurred, resulting in her untimely death.
Tavener previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving for hitting Mayar with his car. He also admitted to two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving, as two other individuals sustained serious injuries in the same collision.
Additional Charges and Sentencing
In addition to the driving offences, Tavener pleaded guilty to causing death while driving uninsured. Today, he received a prison term of three years and 10 months for the careless driving charge that led to Mayar's death.
The court also handed down an additional 18-month jail sentence for a separate violent incident. Tavener was convicted of assaulting and attempting to strangle his girlfriend in a violent attack that occurred several weeks after the fatal crash.
As part of his sentencing, Tavener has been banned from driving for six years. The combined prison terms reflect the severity of his actions both on the road and in the domestic violence case.
Community Impact and Legal Proceedings
The tragic death of Mayar Yahia has deeply affected the local community in Birmingham, highlighting concerns about road safety and driver accountability. The case underscores the devastating consequences of careless driving, particularly when it involves vulnerable pedestrians like young children.
Legal authorities emphasized that Tavener's guilty pleas were taken into consideration during sentencing, but the court maintained that the loss of a young life warranted significant punishment. The additional sentence for the assault charge demonstrates the court's approach to addressing multiple serious offences committed by the defendant.
This case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the legal repercussions that follow when negligence leads to fatal outcomes. The community continues to mourn the loss of Mayar while authorities work to promote safer road practices.
