A harrowing video has emerged from Chicago that captures the moment three armed assailants opened fire on a car containing a young mother and her baby, in a brutal daylight attack that has shocked the community. The footage, described by witnesses as reminiscent of scenes from a war zone, shows the gunmen relentlessly targeting a white sedan in the Auburn Gresham neighbourhood on Wednesday afternoon.
Broad Daylight Horror in Auburn Gresham
The incident occurred around 1:25 pm, when three men dressed entirely in black approached the stationary vehicle and unleashed a barrage of gunfire. A witness filming from a nearby truck captured the terrifying sequence as the sound of dozens of shots echoed through the streets. Shockingly, a man standing just feet away from the violence barely flinched, reportedly ducking behind his car door in what locals describe as a grim testament to how normalised such shootings have become in parts of the city.
A Mother's Final Moments
The victims inside the car were identified as 26-year-old Gabryel Ayres, a 27-year-old man, and Ayres's young daughter who was secured in the backseat. During the chaotic attack, the white sedan crashed into a brown GMC van before the assailants continued their assault, firing from multiple angles. Police reports indicate more than fifty evidence markers were placed at the scene, suggesting an extraordinary volume of gunfire.
Gabryel Ayres sustained multiple gunshot wounds across her body and was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where she later died. The male victim suffered gunshot wounds to his backside and arm but was hospitalised in stable condition. Miraculously, Ayres's infant daughter emerged physically unharmed from the horrific ordeal, a fact her family has described as both a blessing and a heartbreaking reminder of her mother's protective presence.
Community Outrage and Political Fallout
The shooting has ignited fresh outrage about violence in Chicago, with Ayres's godfather, Pastor Kirk Bell, giving an emotional interview to local media. "You know, there's a baby in the car. These animals have no value on life. This is nothing to them," he stated, calling directly for city leadership to take decisive action. "They need to clean this city up. There's gangs, and there's shooting and the killing. It's just unbelievable."
According to recent city statistics, gun violence continues to claim lives at an alarming rate. From January 1st to February 3rd this year, there were 29 fatal shooting victims, accounting for over 90 percent of the city's 32 total homicides during that period. This represents a complex picture, as while homicides have shown some decrease compared to the same period in 2025, when 41 out of 47 homicides were fatal shootings, community leaders argue any loss of life is unacceptable.
Mayor's Response and Legal Action
Mayor Brandon Johnson's administration has pointed to its ongoing lawsuit against firearm manufacturer Glock Inc as part of its strategy to combat gun violence. Filed in July 2024, the lawsuit alleges that Glock knowingly produces and sells pistols that can be easily converted into illegal machine guns using a device called a 'Glock switch'. A Cook County Circuit Court judge denied a motion to dismiss the case in September 2025, which the Mayor hailed as a significant victory.
"As of 2024, our police department has recovered over 1,300 converted Glocks in connection with a wide variety of crimes, including homicides, aggravated assaults, and carjackings," Mayor Johnson stated. "This administration remains committed to protecting Chicagoans from these terrifying weapons that have no place in our city, as part of our broader commitment to community safety."
Divided Reactions to Progressive Policies
Despite these efforts, Mayor Johnson's progressive approach to crime has faced considerable criticism from those who believe his policies are insufficient. Following Ayres's death, social media platforms saw heated debates, with some users directly blaming the Mayor's leadership. "Mayor Brandon Johnson needs to resign. His soft-on-crime policies are ridiculous," wrote one commentator on X, while another added, "Her blood is on his hands."
Others countered that homicide rates have actually decreased under the current administration, highlighting the complex and polarised nature of the crime debate in Chicago. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Mayor's office for further comment on this specific incident and the broader policy response.
A Life Remembered
Gabryel Ayres's obituary paints a picture of a devoted mother whose world revolved around her child. "At only 26 years old, Gabby’s life was taken in a moment of senseless violence, leaving behind a grief so heavy it echoes through her family, her friends, and the wider community," it reads. "Her love as a parent was fierce, protective, and unconditional. That her baby was found unharmed in the back seat on that tragic day stands as both a miracle and a painful testament to Gabby’s final moments."
As police continue their investigation with the offenders still at large, the Auburn Gresham community and the city at large are left grappling with another tragic loss and the persistent challenge of urban violence. The video evidence serves as a stark, disturbing record of a crime that has reignited urgent conversations about safety, policing, and political accountability in one of America's largest cities.
