A former Oceania boxing champion, who previously pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges, is fighting for his life after being shot multiple times in a violent incident in Sydney's south-west. The shooting occurred late on Wednesday night, sparking a chaotic series of events that included an assault on a police officer at a hospital.
Shooting in Chester Hill
Police were called to Campbell Hill Road in Chester Hill around 11:30 pm on Wednesday after reports of gunfire from a black utility vehicle. The bullets struck a second car before both vehicles fled the scene. Just five minutes later, a 26-year-old man with gunshot wounds arrived at Auburn Hospital. He has been identified by media as Humzah Khalid, a former boxing champion known as 'The Raging Bull'.
Hospital Chaos and Assault
Upon arrival at the hospital, officers discovered a Mercedes in the car park with multiple bullet holes, leading them to establish a crime scene. When police attempted to speak to a 30-year-old man in the emergency department, believed to be a friend of the wounded boxer, the situation escalated dramatically. The man allegedly assaulted a 58-year-old chief inspector, repeatedly punching him in the head.
The officer, with assistance from hospital security, arrested the man. The 30-year-old was taken to Auburn Police Station and charged with assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty. He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Burwood Local Court. The injured officer received treatment for cuts to his head.
Khalid's Critical Condition and Criminal Past
Humzah Khalid remains in a critical condition in hospital. During his boxing career, he was a prominent figure, winning the Oceania championship. However, he has a troubled history, having pleaded guilty to kidnapping and detaining offences related to two abductions in 2021. In those incidents, victims were held hostage during planned attacks.
Other Police Incidents Across Sydney
This shooting was part of a particularly violent night for New South Wales Police, with officers injured in two other unrelated incidents across Sydney on Wednesday.
In Bankstown, a 33-year-old man fled during a police patrol at a hotel, leading to a chase onto a nearby road. Both the man and an officer were struck by an oncoming SUV. They were treated at the scene, with the man taken to Liverpool Hospital in stable condition. Police later found drugs on him and made an arrest. The officer involved was hospitalised for assessment of leg and head injuries, while the SUV driver was unharmed.
In a separate incident in Greenacre, a 39-year-old policeman stopped a car on Punchbowl Road around 8:40 pm. As he approached, the driver accelerated, pinning the sergeant between two cars. The officer fired his gun, hitting the vehicle before it drove off. He was taken to hospital with lower leg injuries in stable condition.
Less than an hour later, a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound was seen limping along a street in Ryde, in the city's north-west. Police found him and an abandoned car in the front yard of a home. He was taken to hospital in stable condition and remains under police guard.
These incidents highlight a surge in violent confrontations involving police in Sydney, with multiple officers and suspects requiring medical attention in a single night.
