Boat capsizes off Sydney beach: one dead, boy missing

Emergency services are searching for a missing teenage boy after a fatal boating accident off a popular Sydney beach left one man dead and another hospitalised.

Search Operation Launched After Fatal Capsize

New South Wales Police have confirmed that a man has died and a 14-year-old boy is feared missing following a boat capsize near Barrenjoey Headland at Palm Beach. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, approximately 40 kilometres from Sydney's central business district.

Authorities stated that emergency services were alerted at around 11:35am after receiving reports that a vessel had overturned in the water. Surf Life Saving members were quickly on the scene and managed to pull one man from the water. Despite immediate treatment by NSW Ambulance paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Helicopter Rescue and Ongoing Search Efforts

Police have initiated a large-scale search for the 14-year-old boy, who is believed to have been a passenger on the boat. The operation is being assisted by the PolAir helicopter and volunteers from Marine Rescue NSW, scouring the coastal waters and shoreline.

A second man, aged in his 40s, was able to climb onto rocks following the accident. He was subsequently winched to safety by a rescue helicopter in a dramatic operation. NSW Ambulance reported that the man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries before being transported in a stable condition to North Shore Hospital.

Investigation Underway

The deceased man has not yet been formally identified, and the exact cause of his death remains unconfirmed as investigations continue. Police are working to piece together the circumstances that led to the vessel capsizing in the waters off the northern Sydney beach.

The incident has cast a shadow over the picturesque Palm Beach area, a location popular with boaters and tourists. The search for the missing boy continues as authorities appeal for any witnesses to come forward.
