Newly released air traffic control audio has provided further insight into the final moments before a Cessna 421C aircraft crashed near Austin, Texas, claiming the lives of all five individuals on board.
Erratic Flight and Loss of Contact
The plane, traveling from Amarillo to New Braunfels National Airport, was observed flying erratically before it went down in a wooded area and erupted in flames. Air traffic controllers noted the aircraft's unusual movements before its track disappeared from radar screens, prompting a distress signal and an emergency call to 911.
A pilot flying in proximity to the Cessna reported losing radio contact with the aircraft, according to the audio recordings. Controllers attempted to reach the plane but received no response.
Witness Accounts
Residents living near the crash site described hearing a startling noise followed by an engine backfiring moments before impact. One local resident reported feeling strong vibrations, as if the crash had occurred very close to their home.
Investigation Underway
Federal authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board, have launched an investigation into the incident. The identities of the victims have not yet been publicly released pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the crash remains under determination.
