Manchester Airport Starbucks Headbutt Sparks Violent Brawl and Police Assault Trial
Jurors overseeing the trial of two brothers from Rochdale have been presented with compelling CCTV footage capturing a violent altercation at Manchester Airport's Starbucks. The video evidence shows the moment Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, aged 21, allegedly headbutted a man, igniting a chaotic brawl that later escalated into a confrontation with police officers.
Airport Incident Unfolds After Family Disagreement
The incident occurred on July 23, 2024, when Mohammed Fahir Amaaz and his older brother Muhammad Amaad, 26, travelled to Manchester Airport to collect their mother. Prosecutors revealed that the altercation stemmed from a disagreement their mother had with a man during a flight back to the United Kingdom from Pakistan via Qatar.
Upon arrival at the airport, the situation quickly deteriorated at a nearby Starbucks. CCTV footage played in Liverpool Crown Court depicts Amaaz headbutting Abdulkareem Ismaeil, whom he was previously convicted of assaulting in an earlier trial. The footage further shows Amaaz punching Mr Ismaeil with both hands before the fight was broken up by his brother and mother.
Witness Testimony Describes Aggressive Behaviour
Cameron Cartledge, the duty manager at Starbucks during the incident, provided crucial testimony to the court. He reported hearing raised voices from the cafe area and witnessed the argument involving three adults. Mr Cartledge stated that Amaaz appeared to be the primary aggressor, citing his aggressive body language and tone of voice.
"It was not long at all, maybe just a few minutes, before Amaaz headbutted Mr Ismaeil," Mr Cartledge told the court. He described how Amaaz attempted to throw punches at Mr Ismaeil, though he believed none connected with the victim's face. Importantly, Mr Cartledge confirmed he did not observe any violent actions from Mr Ismaeil during the confrontation.
Police Response and Subsequent Assault Allegations
Mr Cartledge promptly contacted law enforcement after witnessing the headbutt, with officers arriving swiftly at the coffee shop. However, the brothers and their mother had already departed the scene. The court heard that the situation escalated further when Amaaz allegedly assaulted three police officers at a pay station in Terminal 2.
In a previous trial, Amaaz was convicted of assaulting Abdulkareem Ismaeil at Starbucks and assaulting two female police officers, PC Lydia Ward and PC Ellie Cook. The court was informed that PC Ward suffered profuse bleeding and was left in tears following the assault.
Current Trial Focuses on Armed Officer Assault
The ongoing trial specifically addresses allegations that both Amaaz and Amaad assaulted armed officer PC Zachary Marsden, occasioning actual bodily harm, during the pay station incident. Both defendants have denied this single charge. Prosecutors presented jurors with a detailed sequence of events document, including still images from the CCTV footage, to establish the timeline of the altercation.
The trial continues as the court examines the evidence surrounding the violent episode that transformed a routine airport pickup into a significant criminal case involving multiple assaults and police intervention.
