Ann Widdecombe Murder: Police Find No Evidence of Political Motive
Widdecombe Murder: No Political Motive Found, Say Police

Devon and Cornwall Police have stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest the murder of former Conservative MP and minister Ann Widdecombe was politically motivated or terrorism-related. The 28-year-old white British man arrested on suspicion of murder in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, remains in custody.

Arrest and Investigation Update

Ms Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor at approximately 11:40am on Thursday. The suspect was arrested shortly after 9pm on Saturday. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman told reporters on Sunday: “At this point, there is still no information to suggest that this is a terrorism-related incident and at this point we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this murder. At this stage, there is nothing to suggest that it was politically motivated.”

ACC Longman emphasised that detectives “remain open-minded about the potential motive” and stressed that there is no believed threat to the wider public. He urged the public to refrain from speculation, noting that over 120 instances of information had been provided by the public to investigating officers.

Appeal Against Speculation

ACC Longman added: “We are aware of online and public speculation, particularly with regards to motive. Again, I urge people not to share or engage with that speculation – it’s unhelpful, it doesn’t aid our investigation, and particularly, it’s distressing to the family and friends of Miss Widdecombe.”

Chief Constable James Vaughan expressed gratitude for the support received from colleagues regionally and nationally, describing the investigation as having “been running at lightning pace for 48 hours.” He confirmed: “We are really pleased that we have a suspect firmly in custody.”

Public Assistance

Police continue to appeal for any relevant information, images, or footage, which can be reported via the Major Incident Public Portal. The public is urged to avoid sharing unverified information online to prevent hindering the investigation and causing distress to those close to Ms Widdecombe.
