Peter Murrell and trans killer Alex Stewart in same prison
Campaigners have welcomed the prospect of one of Scotland’s most notorious trans female prisoners sharing a cell with SNP swindler Peter Murrell. Both Murrell and killer Alexandra Stewart were thought to be heading for cushy HMP Dumfries on Tuesday after the Scottish Government agreed to move all trans women from the female prison estate.
Former SNP chief executive Murrell had already been held at the jail before receiving a five year and three months prison sentence for his huge embezzlement of party funds. As the prospect of the two high profile jailbirds being checked in at the same prison emerged, some have questioned if they could be forced to share a cell together.
Ex-boxing promoter's role in gangland killer's crime mob
A former boxing promoter who was a trusted lieutenant in a gangland killer's crime mob has been jailed for six years. Mario Rea, 47, was a sidekick on the streets for Robert "Birdman" O'Hara, 48, while he was behind bars for the murder of a rival. The vast amount of dirty cash raked in from the major narcotics operation funded an illicit lifestyle for O'Hara's partner and daughter of luxury flats, fast cars as well as designer clothes and watches.
Rea was today sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow. He had earlier pled guilty to two charges of being involved in serious organised crime as well as another under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The court heard the gang was snared after a large-scale police probe in 2021. O'Hara was serving a life sentence at the time having been convicted in 2005 for the murder of Paul McDowall in Glasgow's Possilpark.

How long will Peter Murrell spend in jail?
Peter Murrell is likely to be set free after serving just half his prison term according to a legal expert. Murrell was given a sentence of seven years reduced to five years and three months because of his guilty plea earlier this month at the High Court in Edinburgh. Veteran criminal lawyer William McIntyre says people sentenced to terms of more than four years would normally have to serve two thirds before they can be automatically released. However William believes Murrell will get out after serving two years and seven months - half the sentence imposed by the judge Lord Young.
He says the shamed former Scottish National Party Chief Executive will be able to apply for parole before he has served half and is likely to be released once he passes that point. William explained: "Because the offence is non violent, non sexual and non domestic Murrell will probably get out having done half. He is also a first offender and I don't think the Parole Board is likely to say 'you are probably going to go and out and buy another camper van if we let you go'."
