A letter signed 'Madeleine X' was posted to the parents of Madeleine McCann the day after two women accused of stalking them visited their property, a court has heard. The development emerged at Leicester Crown Court on Wednesday as Madeleine's mother, Kate McCann, gave evidence from behind a curtain to shield her from the defendants.
The court heard that Karen Spragg, 61, and Julia Wandelt, 24, who claims to be the missing girl, went to the McCanns' home in Leicestershire on 7 December 2024. During the hearing, Wandelt became emotional, shouting 'why are you doing to me?' before being escorted from the dock.
The letter, read in court, expressed remorse for causing distress and pleaded for a DNA test. It stated: 'I'm so sorry for causing you so much distress, but when I saw you yesterday, my emotions were so strong. All I want is to find out the truth. I have memories and I have gathered a lot of evidences supporting my case.'
The letter continued: 'I think that inside your heart you believe and know who I am and I am your daughter. I don't understand why you don't want to do a DNA test with me. I think you are scared, but whatever makes you scared, just remember that you are stronger than that. I believe and I hope that you will find a way to contact me.'
