Double Fatality in Late-Night Bruce Highway Collision

A devastating late-night crash on Queensland's Bruce Highway has claimed the lives of a young woman and a toddler, leaving communities in mourning and emergency services dealing with the aftermath.

The tragic incident occurred around 10.40pm on Wednesday at the intersection of Raspberry Creek Road and Kunwarara Road in the Canoona area. Emergency services responded to reports of two trucks - identified as a Mercedes-Benz and a Freightliner - colliding in what witnesses describe as a horrific impact.

Emergency Response and Casualties

Queensland Police confirmed that the driver of one vehicle, believed to be in his 20s, sustained serious injuries and required airlift transportation to Rockhampton Hospital for emergency treatment.

Tragically, two passengers travelling in the same truck - identified as a woman in her 20s and a toddler - suffered life-threatening injuries and were declared deceased at the scene despite paramedics' efforts.

The Mercedes-Benz driver, who was the sole occupant of their vehicle, received minor injuries and was also transported to Rockhampton Hospital for assessment and treatment.

Highway Closure and Grass Fire

The Bruce Highway through Canoona remained closed in all directions throughout Thursday morning, causing significant disruption to motorists and local traffic. Authorities have advised drivers to avoid the area entirely and seek alternative routes until further notice.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman confirmed to media outlets that the collision sparked a small grassfire in nearby vegetation, requiring immediate attention from emergency crews.

Four Queensland Fire Rescue units worked to extinguish flames on one of the trucks involved, while two rural fire crews successfully contained the spreading grassfire preventing further damage to surrounding areas.

Ongoing Investigation

Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash and are appealing to the public for assistance.

Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have relevant dashcam footage that could help establish the events leading up to the tragedy.

Members of the public with any information are urged to contact Queensland Police immediately as the investigation continues to develop.
