Communications Minister Anika Wells has declared that Telstra must 'face the music' following a significant network outage that disrupted services across Australia. Speaking on Sunday, Wells confirmed that Telstra had formally notified the triple-zero custodian that the outage was fully resolved.
Welfare Checks Completed Without Incident
Wells stated that all welfare checks referred by Telstra to state emergency services had been completed, with no adverse outcomes linked to those efforts. 'That is a huge relief to all Australians. I want to thank those who provided support to those seven individuals who did need assistance,' she said. 'Their quick and diligent work on this occasion may well have saved lives.'
Minister's Stern Warning to Telstra
The minister then directed sharp criticism at the telecommunications giant. 'The last few days have been really difficult for many Australians and now that Telstra has resolved its outage, it is time for Telstra to face the music,' Wells said. 'Telstra has a lot of questions to answer … Telstra has held special trust from Australians. It has been respected as the premium service. It is an iconic company. It has a rich history. But that trust really stands in peril today. It is going to take Telstra a lot of time and a lot of work to rebuild that trust with Australians.'
Impact of the Outage
The outage, which began on Wednesday, affected millions of customers and disrupted mobile, internet, and landline services. Triple-zero emergency calls were also impacted, prompting swift government response. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has launched an investigation into the incident, with Telstra facing potential penalties for failing to meet reliability standards.
