Former Pontycymmer pub site to become 12 affordable flats
Former pub site in Pontycymmer to become 12 affordable flats

Work has started on plans to build new council homes on the site of a former village pub in Bridgend county that burned down in a fire years ago. The scheme will see 12 one- and two-bedroom flats built and offered at social rent in the village of Pontycymer at the site of the former Ffaldau Arms.

The building was destroyed in a fire in 2007 and demolished shortly after, leaving the site empty. Following council approval, the proposals from Bridgend-based housing association Valleys to Coast are now set to be delivered.

Details of the development

The association currently provides more than 6,000 affordable homes across Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf. Speaking on the project, a spokesman for Valleys to Coast said: “Valleys to Coast will work with Neath-based contractor CJ Construction to deliver the Ffaldau Arms scheme, which will comprise 12 one- and two-bedroom flats offered at social rent.

“The well-connected site is on Oxford Street in the heart of Pontycymer. Future residents will benefit from half-hourly bus services to both Bridgend and Blaengarw. Amenities including shops, cafés, primary and nursery schools are within walking distance of the development.”

Community and financial support

They added the project would also deliver wider community benefits through a £5,000 contribution to support local initiatives. The scheme that aims to revitalise the site is also supported by Welsh Government, which is contributing £2.1m or 65% of the scheme’s total cost, through its social housing grant.

Rob Green, director of growth and partnerships at Valleys to Coast, said: “We’re proud to be transforming another brownfield site which highlights our genuine commitment to supporting the regeneration of Bridgend and investing in our communities.”
