This catastrophic derailment then triggered a second train, en route from Madrid to Huelva, to also leave the rails.
Heartbreaking Personal Loss
Among the victims was a six-year-old girl who had been returning from watching the Lion King musical in Madrid with her parents. Tragically, both her parents, identified as Jose Zamorano and shop owner Cristina Alvarez, were killed in the collision, leaving the young girl orphaned. The family's tragedy deepened when it was confirmed that her 12-year-old brother, Pepe Zamorano, and a cousin, Felix Zamorano, also perished. The orphaned girl, whose name has not been released, was initially cared for overnight by a police officer before being handed to her grandmother to rest in a hotel in Cordoba.
Second Derailment Near Barcelona Adds to the Carnage
Just two days later, a commuter train derailed and crashed near Barcelona, killing the driver and injuring at least 37 people. This separate incident compounded the national trauma, with harrowing images from both crash sites showing destroyed trains and debris scattered across the landscape. The scenes depicted emergency crews battling to rescue survivors and assess the extensive damage.
