A 28-year-old man has crowned himself Britain's 'Service Station King' after spending over a decade exploring the nation's motorways. Rich Cross has visited all 97 service stations in the UK, traveling in his two-door Smart car, and has gathered a wealth of knowledge about what makes a good stop.
Top Service Stations and Red Flags
Cross names Gloucester, Tebay, Beaconsfield, Rugby, and Cairn Lodge as the best service stations. He warns that potholes and dirty toilets are major red flags. "If the toilets are a mess, that's a big red flag. The condition of the road through the site is a big thing for me," he says. Potholes are especially problematic for lorry drivers, who are the most frequent customers.
Essential Features
According to Cross, the best service stations offer multiple brands, EV charging points, and easy access. He distinguishes between 'online' sites, which are directly on the motorway via a slip road, and 'offline' sites, which require exiting the motorway. "Online sites are preferred because you don't have to faff around as much," he explains.
The Little-Known Rule
One rule most drivers are unaware of is the parking time limit. Cross reveals that most service stations allow a maximum stay of three hours. "Most people spend between half an hour and an hour there, but some are in and out in five minutes," he notes. Drive-thrus at some sites have changed the dynamics, but there are no social rules beyond the parking limit.
Quirky and Modern Stations
Cross highlights stations with bridges where visitors can eat while watching traffic below, such as Charnock Richard, Keele, and Leicester Forest East. Newer stations are incorporating walking routes and green spaces. Rugby, one of the newest, emphasizes design and nature.
Beaconsfield is popular for its 15 different brands and its location as the first stop on the M40 when leaving London. Lancaster Services on the M6 is iconic for its Pennine Tower, which once housed a restaurant with views of Lancashire.
Cross explains why his top picks stand out: "Gloucester, Tebay, and Cairn Lodge are run by the same company. They have a farm-shop style with locally sourced, freshly made produce. That's why they always rate highly."
