Rail Worker Hero Discharged After Huntingdon Stabbing

A train worker who shielded passengers during a mass stabbing on a service near Huntingdon has been discharged from hospital. Samir Zitouni, 48, a member of the catering crew on the Doncaster to London King’s Cross service, was stabbed on 1 November and initially in a critical but stable condition.

British Transport Police confirmed on 15 November that Mr Zitouni had been released from hospital to continue his recovery at home. A spokesperson said he had suffered multiple injuries but was discharged thanks to the efforts of NHS medical staff.

Mr Zitouni’s family expressed gratitude for public support and praised his bravery, but asked for privacy as he faces a significant recovery. He has worked for LNER for more than 20 years, and there have been calls for him to receive an honour for his actions.

Shadow Secretary of State Richard Holden MP has written to Minister of State Darren Jones requesting recognition for Mr Zitouni’s ‘acts of selfless and outstanding bravery’. Neighbour Fernando Portilla described him as ‘one of a kind’ and a hero.

Anthony Williams, 32, has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder and is due to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on 1 December.
