RAC Urges Drivers to Pack 5 Items for Summer Getaway

The RAC is advising motorists to carry five essential items in their vehicles this Saturday as the summer school holidays begin, with an estimated 14 million extra car journeys expected between Friday, July 17 and Sunday, July 19. The breakdown firm predicts a 'Saturday summer scramble' on July 18, with 3.8 million trips on that day alone, while Friday and Sunday are each expected to see 3.4 million journeys.

Heatwave and Traffic Jams Increase Breakdown Risk

Higher petrol prices—costing £8.90 more to fill a tank than last year—are not deterring drivers, according to the RAC. Popular destinations include Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset, and northwest England. The combination of heavy traffic and ongoing hot weather is likely to cause more breakdowns than usual.

RAC breakdown spokesperson Harriet Hernando said: "The great British summer staycation is about to get off to a flying start, with many opting to stay in the UK instead of travelling abroad. This could be down to people having more confidence in the weather, as well as concerns over cancelled flights, higher air fares and EU border delays."

Five Items to Pack

Hernando urged drivers to ensure their cars are 'summer-ready' by checking oil, coolant, and tyre pressure. She highlighted five key items to carry: plenty of water, suncream, an umbrella for shade, a phone charger, and a portable battery pack for calling breakdown assistance. The RAC reported a 20% increase in breakdowns during the June heatwave, underscoring the need for preparation.

Plan Journeys to Avoid Delays

"Drivers should be ready for the 'Saturday summer scramble' and plan their journeys, thinking about setting off earlier or later in the day to avoid traffic jams," Hernando added. "People should prepare for delays and getting stuck in a jam in potentially very hot weather."
