Police in Derbyshire have issued vital guidance for drivers navigating treacherous winter roads, as forecasters warn that hazardous conditions are set to continue. The Met Office has cautioned that wintry showers and icy surfaces could persist across large parts of the UK throughout the weekend, following a severe cold snap.
Police Urge Caution for All Drivers
Derbyshire Constabulary is urging all motorists to ensure they and their vehicles are prepared for the dangerous conditions. The force emphasised that even experienced drivers can be caught out by hidden perils like black ice, which dramatically increases the risk to everyone on the road.
Officers also highlighted that many newly qualified drivers may be facing their first winter behind the wheel and could be particularly vulnerable. In response, they have published comprehensive safety advice designed to help drivers of all experience levels stay safe.
The Three-Step Method for Moving Off
For those driving manual transmission vehicles, Derbyshire Police recommend a specific three-point plan for pulling away on ice. First, pull away slowly. Second, use second gear if needed to keep engine revolutions low and maintain tyre traction. Third, gently release the clutch to prevent the wheels from spinning uncontrollably.
Once moving, drivers should accelerate smoothly, keep revs down, and change up to a higher gear as soon as it is practical to do so. This advice is also relevant for automatic car users, who should aim for steady speeds and be especially vigilant on bends and hills to ensure all acceleration and braking is gradual and controlled.
Official Highway Code Rules for Icy Roads
This police guidance aligns with the official Highway Code, specifically Rule 231, which instructs motorists to "drive extremely carefully when the roads are icy." The Code warns against sudden actions that could lead to a loss of control, advising reduced speeds, using the highest gear possible, and accelerating and braking 'very gently'.
For corners, drivers should brake progressively on the straight before the bend and steer smoothly around it. Furthermore, Rule 228 advises planning ahead and only travelling in snow and ice if the journey is essential.
If you must travel, the Code recommends allowing extra time and carrying an emergency kit. This should include:
- De-icer and an ice scraper
- A torch and warm clothing with boots
- A first aid kit and jump leads
- A shovel, plus a warm drink and emergency food in case you become stranded
