In a significant boost for affordable travel, a new direct rail service connecting London and Scotland has launched, with single tickets starting from just £33.10. The budget operator Lumo, part of FirstGroup plc, commenced its inaugural run on Tuesday, promising to transform connectivity between the nations.
A New Era for Budget Intercity Travel
The new route directly links Glasgow with Falkirk, Edinburgh, key destinations in the North East of England, and the capital. The first southbound service departed Glasgow Queen Street at 6.16pm on Tuesday, arriving at London's King's Cross station a minute ahead of schedule. Branded as the "Ryanair of trains," Lumo states its combination of low fares and high customer satisfaction scores will make travel between these cities more accessible than ever.
Fares, Frequency, and Future Plans
Passengers can secure seats between London and Glasgow from £33.10, while journeys connecting Newcastle and Glasgow start at an even lower £10.90. Initially, the service will operate with two northbound and one southbound train each weekday. The launch is strategically timed, with Lumo suggesting it will "attract more people" to Glasgow when it hosts the Commonwealth Games in July 2026.
Looking further ahead, Lumo has announced plans to launch a brand new route connecting Stirling with London Euston from May 2026. This service intends to run five trains daily, stopping at ten stations across England and Scotland, and will place it in direct competition with operators like Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, and LNER.

"This is a landmark moment which will boost connectivity between Scotland and England, offering a sustainable travel option whilst also boosting economic growth," he said. Jones added that it was a pleasure to celebrate with the dedicated team and partners, expressing pride in championing Scotland through this unique service.
As an "open access" operator, Lumo's expansion introduces fresh competition on these vital rail corridors, potentially driving down prices and offering travellers more choice for journeys between the UK's major capitals.
