Motorists are being warned that the right-hand lane of the motorway, commonly mislabeled as the 'fast lane', is strictly for overtaking. The Highway Code stipulates that drivers should keep to the left lane unless overtaking and must return to the left lane when safe. Those towing trailers or operating certain heavy vehicles are prohibited from using the right lane on motorways with three or more lanes, with fines of up to £300 and three penalty points for violations.
Vehicles Banned from the Right Lane
- Goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes maximum laden weight
- Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes up to 7.5 tonnes with a speed limiter
- Passenger vehicles carrying more than eight seated passengers plus driver, over 7.5 tonnes
- Passenger vehicles carrying more than eight seated passengers plus driver, up to 7.5 tonnes with a speed limiter
- Vehicles towing a trailer
- Motor tractors, light locomotives, or heavy locomotives
Exceptions to the Rule
Exceptions apply when overtaking a vehicle carrying or drawing a load of exceptional width, or when changing lanes is not reasonably practicable without causing danger or inconvenience.
Stay Safe This Summer
With many planning road trips, drivers are urged to adhere to lane rules to avoid penalties and ensure safety.
