M6 Traffic: Two-Hour Delays After Overnight Roadworks Overrun

Motorists are facing delays of up to two hours on the M6 in Cheshire this morning (Thursday, July 9) after overnight roadworks overran their scheduled end time, National Highways has confirmed. The disruption, which began in the early hours, has led to six miles of congestion southbound between Junction 21A and Junction 21 near Warrington.

Lane Closures and Congestion

Three lanes out of four were closed on the M6 southbound between J21A and J21 due to roadworks that failed to finish by the agreed 6am deadline. National Highways reported that the closures caused mile-long queues and delays exceeding 120 minutes. In a post on X at 6.40am, the agency stated: "The #M6 in #Cheshire southbound between J21A-J21 has lanes 2,3 and 4 (of 4) closed due to roadworks that have over ran their pre-agreed end time of 6am. Lane closures are in the process of being removed."

All Lanes Reopened But Delays Remain

All lanes have since been reopened, but residual congestion continues to cause significant delays. National Highways advised drivers to allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes where possible. The affected stretch runs from the M56 J9 interchange at Lymm to the A57 Manchester Road at Woolston.
