The M6 motorway in Lancashire was closed in both directions following a serious incident involving a lorry fire. The closure occurred between junction 27 at Shevington Interchange and junction 28 at Leyland Interchange, causing significant disruption for motorists.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident at 10:47am on 18th July 2025. Firefighters from Leyland fire station used breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire in one of the vehicles involved in a collision. The northbound carriageway remained closed for several hours as emergency services worked at the scene.
National Highways confirmed that the northbound carriageway was reopened, but one lane of three remained closed for resurfacing works overnight. Traffic held in the closure was released past the scene in the outside lane, though officials warned it would take time to clear the four-mile queue.
A diversion route was put in place for southbound traffic, directing drivers via the B5256, A49, and local roads to rejoin the M6 at junction 27. Lancashire Police urged motorists not to film from their vehicles, stating that two people had already been seen doing so and would face prosecution.
