The M1 southbound in Bedfordshire has been closed following a serious collision involving a van and a crane near Milton Keynes. The incident occurred between junctions 14 and 13 at around 6.30am on Monday.
National Highways confirmed the motorway is shut to traffic, with emergency services including Bedfordshire Police, Fire & Rescue, and the East of England Ambulance Service in attendance. Trapped vehicles within the closure are being released, but long queues remain.
Traffic data company Inrix reported that congestion extends to Newport Pagnell Services. A diversion route is in place via the A509 and A421, marked by a Hollow Circle symbol, directing drivers to exit at junction 14 and rejoin at junction 13.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area and allow extra time for their journeys. The closure is expected to remain in place for some time while accident investigation work is carried out.
