A major motorway closure has caused severe disruption for morning commuters in Berkshire, with the M4 shut in both directions on Wednesday, February 18. The closure spans between Junction 10 at Wokingham and Junction 11 at Reading, following the discovery of structural damage to a power line pylon near the motorway. National Highways has confirmed that emergency works are underway, with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) carrying out urgent repairs.

National Highways stated that the damage to the pylon requires immediate attention due to strong winds forecast in the area. A spokesperson emphasised, "Due to the extent of the damage, the M4 is expected to remain closed in both directions throughout Wednesday." This has led to warnings of long delays not only on the motorway but also on local roads as traffic seeks alternative routes.
Police Chase Incident Precedes Closure
The closure comes in the wake of a police chase on the same stretch of road on Tuesday. According to the Metropolitan Police, a man in his 30s was arrested after a vehicle failed to stop, leading to a pursuit. During the incident, the driver rammed a police car, causing it to swerve and lose a tyre. The road was closed for several hours as a result, adding to the ongoing traffic woes.
Diversion Routes Implemented
To manage the disruption, National Highways has issued detailed diversion routes for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Eastbound drivers are advised to follow the hollow circle symbol on road signs, exiting at J11 and using the B3270 and A3290 before rejoining at J10. Westbound traffic should follow the hollow square symbol, leaving at J10 and navigating via the A329(M) and B3270 to re-enter at J11.
M25 Reopens After Separate Incident
In related traffic news, the M25 clockwise within Junction 25 at Waltham Cross has reopened after emergency resurfacing works. The closure was due to a lorry suffering a fuel leak earlier in the day. Specialist contractors completed the repairs, and residual delays in the area are now easing, according to National Highways East.
