The Changing Perception of Luxury Handbags
Designer handbag prices are skyrocketing, with classic Chanel flap bags now retailing for an astounding $11,000 and Hermès purses fetching up to $100,000. These accessories have long been seen as status symbols for the super wealthy. However, a shift is underway. On social media platforms like TikTok, fashion enthusiasts are debating whether these expensive bags still signify wealth or have become commonplace due to the proliferation of high-quality dupes.
The Rise of Dupe Culture
It is more difficult than ever to distinguish a genuine designer bag from a fake. This benefits consumers seeking affordable knockoffs that closely mimic the real thing, but it undermines the exclusivity that luxury brands once offered. According to New York-based stylist Upasna Singh, “dupe culture has significantly changed perception” because “what was once a rare monogram can now be found on the sidewalk.” Many ultra-wealthy women are now ditching their designer duds for more affordable bags that offer similar luxury without the hefty price tag.
Singh, founder of a luxury accessories brand, notes that her high net worth clients “are intentionally stepping away from overtly expensive bags and opting for design forward, well made mid-range options that feel understated.” She explains that Hermès, historically known for scarcity, saw a dupe of its style become one of the top-selling products on Amazon and Walmart just months ago. This trend is causing some super wealthy individuals to forego the humbling experience of securing a quota bag and instead embrace almost identical dupes.
Brands Leading the Quiet Luxury Movement
London-based brand DeMellier has become a hit with celebrities like Emily Blunt, Olivia Palermo, Reese Witherspoon, and Meryl Streep. Their Santorini bag, priced at $355, offers high quality and uniqueness without costing thousands. Similarly, New York-based Verafied has gained traction on social media for its Mini Gold Chocolate Hobo Bag ($198), which looks like a designer piece but costs a fraction. Kate Spade is experiencing a resurgence, with stars like Mindy Kaling, Zooey Deschanel, Alix Earle, Camila Cabello, Becky G, and Charli D'Amelio sporting their styles. Even Kendall Jenner was seen carrying the Duo Mini Shoulder Bag ($158).
French brand Sezane offers the Claude Bag ($450), an elegant, timeless option that has been spotted on Meghan Markle, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Sofia Richie. M. Gemi, favored by Lucy Hale, Gigi Hadid, Eva Longoria, and Gwyneth Paltrow, provides classic leather goods like the Lola Small Convertible Tote ($298). Founder Maria Gangemi states, “Quiet luxury in handbags is long overdue,” adding that customers are realizing a four-figure price tag is not the only way to get Italian leather, careful construction, and durability.
Why Wealthy Shoppers Are Switching
Gangemi observes that as handbag prices have skyrocketed at luxury houses, her clients have become unwilling to pay for the name alone. Instead, they seek soft leather, high-quality hardware, and truly luxurious bags without exorbitant price tags. This shift reflects a broader trend towards understated elegance and value-conscious spending among even the wealthiest consumers.
