Labour has launched a scathing attack on Transport Secretary Mark Harper after it emerged that Italian rail operator Trenitalia has been handed a significant role in the development of Great British Railways (GBR). The opposition party has accused the government of outsourcing critical infrastructure decisions to foreign firms, sparking a heated debate over the future of the UK's rail network.

Controversial Contract Award

The Department for Transport confirmed that Trenitalia, through its UK subsidiary, will oversee the operation of c2c rail services in Essex—a decision that has raised eyebrows among Labour MPs. Shadow Transport Secretary Louise Haigh labelled the move as "another example of the Conservatives' failure to prioritise British expertise."

Growing Concerns Over Foreign Involvement

Critics argue that awarding contracts to international operators undermines the government's own vision for GBR, which was meant to bring rail operations back under public control. "How can we trust this government to deliver a truly British rail revolution when they're handing the keys to foreign companies?" questioned one Labour backbencher.

Government Defends Decision

In response, the Department for Transport stated that Trenitalia's involvement is temporary and part of a broader strategy to improve rail services. A spokesperson emphasised that "this arrangement ensures continuity of service while we work towards the full establishment of Great British Railways."
