A hot air balloon made a dramatic landing in the middle of a residential street in Bedford on Saturday, with bystanders rushing to help guide it down safely. The incident occurred on Bower Street at around 9.30am, as local resident Sam Coldham was walking his dog with his partner, Sian King.
Footage captured by King shows the balloon descending between parked cars, telegraph poles, and wires. Several onlookers can be seen grabbing the guide rope to assist the pilot in lowering the balloon, narrowly avoiding houses and vehicles. Georgia Balać, whose partner helped using an emergency line, described the landing as 'extraordinary' and 'near-perfect'.
The British Balloon and Airship Club confirmed to the BBC that the balloon 'landed without incident' and that everyone involved was unharmed. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulates all ballooning operations in the UK, requiring commercial pilots to hold a valid licence.
According to a report by ScienceDirect, only 98 hot air balloon incidents occurred in the UK between 1976 and 2004. In April, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) investigated a collision in Essex caused by a malfunction with a balloon's envelope.
