Fatal Train Crash Near Bedford: Disruption Until June 28

Network Rail has described the fatal train crash near Bedford as a "tragic, isolated incident" and warned passengers to expect disruption until June 28 as a "complex recovery operation" to remove damaged trains and carriages continues.

Crash Details and Casualties

The collision occurred shortly after 5pm on Friday, involving two East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains. One train smashed into the back of the other on the same line, killing a train driver and injuring 100 others. According to the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAS), 11 people were very seriously injured, 32 were seriously hurt, and 57 suffered minor injuries. British Transport Police reported that more than 80 people were treated in hospital on Friday night, with 28 still in hospital as of Saturday morning, nine of whom were in a critical condition.

Recovery and Service Impact

On Sunday, Network Rail began the complex task of removing the damaged trains and carriages. Engineers will then assess the damage and complete repairs. Passengers have been urged to travel only if "absolutely necessary," as services to and from Bedford will be disrupted for another week. There will be no services north of Luton on the Thameslink line and no EMR services south of Bedford. A limited rail replacement bus service will operate between Luton and Bedford.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail Eastern regional managing director, stated: "While investigations are still at an early stage, current indications are that this was a tragic, isolated incident. We are focused on the safe reopening of the railway and getting services running as quickly as possible. During this time, our message to passengers is clear – please expect disruption to services through this area for the majority of next week and only travel if absolutely necessary."
