Brits Urged to Make Vital Fridge and Freezer Changes This Week

As the UK enters its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach 36°C, experts are urging Brits to make crucial adjustments to their fridge and freezers. These changes can help reduce energy bills and ensure food remains safe during the hot spell.

Heatwave Prompts Health Alerts

The Met Office has issued amber and yellow heat health alerts, with the East of England forecast to be the hottest region on Thursday and Friday. Warm conditions are expected to continue into next week, following June being recorded as England's warmest ever. Professor Stephen Belcher CBE, Met Office Chief Scientist, said: "June's heatwave was a significant weather event, with a Red Extreme Heat Warning issued. Human-induced climate change has made events like this more likely and more intense."

Why Fridge-Freezers Need Attention

During heatwaves, fridge-freezers work harder to maintain cool temperatures, consuming more energy. Kitchens often become the hottest rooms in the house, putting additional strain on appliances. Ensuring proper air circulation around the fridge and freezer can help reduce energy costs.

Create Space Around Your Fridge

BBC Good Food advised: "Check that appliances are far enough from the wall at the back for air to circulate; the manual will have told you how far this should be, if you can't find it, then look online, most manuals are available to download." Additionally, keep the back of the fridge free from dust and debris to allow air to flow freely around the coils.

Avoid Overpacking

Fridges work more effectively when air can move freely around the shelves. Avoid cramming them with food, particularly towards the top. Freezers require a sufficient number of items inside to function efficiently, but should not be overstuffed. Cold air must circulate properly to freeze food effectively, so ensure adequate spacing between items. Beko explained: "It is important to leave enough room for air to circulate the fridge's interior when packing your fridge. If the appliance is crammed with groceries, cold air will not be able to circulate fully, meaning temperatures will vary."

Keep the Door Shut

Limiting how often you open fridge and freezer doors is another effective way to keep them running smoothly during warmer weather. Argos said: "Each time you open the door, this allows warm air to enter and increases the appliance's workload in maintaining an appropriate internal temperature."
