Blue Badge Holders Cannot Park in 11 Places at Any Time

Blue Badge holders in Scotland enjoy significant parking concessions, including free parking in disabled bays and on yellow lines, but they must be aware of 11 locations where parking is prohibited at any time of day or night. Failure to comply can result in fines or penalties.

Where Blue Badge Holders Can Park

According to Transport Scotland, Blue Badge holders can park free of charge and without time limit at on-street parking meter spaces, pay-and-display spaces, and disabled person’s parking spaces. They can also park on single or double yellow lines, provided there are no loading restrictions and it is safe to do so. However, Transport Scotland recommends parking in designated bays rather than on yellow lines whenever possible.

11 Places Where Parking Is Never Allowed

Even with a Blue Badge, parking is strictly prohibited in the following locations:

  • In loading/unloading bays unless signs specify time limits for badge holders
  • On double or single red lines during their hours of operation
  • Where there are one or two yellow markings on the kerb
  • Where there are double white lines in the centre of the road, even if one line is broken
  • Parking places reserved for specific users such as residents or taxis
  • Pedestrian crossings and zigzag lines
  • Clearways (including urban and bus stop clearways) during their hours of operation
  • School ‘keep clear’ markings during the hours shown on the yellow no-stopping plate
  • Bus, tram, or cycle lanes (badge holders are not entitled to drive in bus lanes)
  • Suspended meter bays or when use of the meter is not allowed
  • Where temporary parking restrictions are in force, such as roadworks or no-waiting cones

Correct Display of the Blue Badge

When parking, the Blue Badge must be displayed correctly on top of the dashboard, clearly readable through the front windscreen. The front of the badge should face upward, and the photo side should not be visible. Highlighted indicators on the badge help ensure proper placement.

Important Rules for Blue Badge Use

Transport Scotland emphasises that Blue Badge holders must follow strict rules. If you are not getting out of the vehicle, you should not use the badge to obtain a parking space. Passengers may use the badge for drop-off or pick-up, but if the driver remains in the car, the badge must be removed and the driver should park in a non-disabled space. Always check local signs for time restrictions and use a parking clock where required.

Misuse of a Blue Badge is a criminal offence. Only the named holder may use the badge, and it must not be lent to others. If the badge is lost, stolen, or damaged, report it to the police and local council immediately. Renewals should be made before the badge expires.
