Bedford Train Crash: 53 in Hospital, 8 Critical, Driver Dead

British Transport Police have confirmed that 53 people remain in hospital following the train collision near Bedford on Friday, June 19, with eight in a critical condition. The driver of one of the trains, Shaun Burton, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crash Details and Casualties

The collision occurred at 5:15 pm on Friday when the 4:40 pm East Midlands Railway (EMR) service from Corby to London St Pancras struck the stationary 3:50 pm train from Nottingham to London St Pancras at Alstone near Bedford. More than 100 people were initially injured and received hospital treatment. By Monday, 53 remained in hospital, including eight in critical condition.

Investigation and Official Statements

Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy of British Transport Police stated: “First and foremost, the thoughts of everyone at BTP are with the driver Shaun Burton’s family and colleagues, and all those injured and affected by the collision on Friday. This is a priority investigation for BTP and our experienced senior investigating officer is working in parallel with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) to establish the full circumstances.” He added that personal property has been recovered and an update on retrieval will be provided.

Transport Secretary's Response

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander addressed the House of Commons on Monday, confirming that the RAIB has launched an independent investigation and will provide an update in the coming days. She urged against speculation, saying: “I am determined we get all the answers we’re looking for and that lessons are learned.” She also offered condolences to Burton's family and praised the emergency services for their rapid response, noting that all passengers were clear of the scene by 11 pm on Friday.

Recovery and Rail Disruption

The railway between Bedford and Luton is expected to remain closed for the rest of the week as a complex recovery operation to remove damaged trains and carriages continues. Services between Luton and London St Pancras are running, with rail replacement services in place due to planned engineering works. EMR has set up a dedicated care line for affected passengers.
