An Air India pilot has been removed from duty after Canadian authorities suspected him of being intoxicated just before he was due to command a long-haul flight from Vancouver to Delhi.
Pilot Detained at Vancouver International Airport
The incident occurred on 23 December at Vancouver International Airport. According to reports, the pilot was scheduled to operate Air India flight AI186 to Delhi when he was detained by Canadian officials. The crew member reportedly failed a breathalyser test, leading to his immediate removal from the flight deck.
Flight Delayed and Formal Investigation Launched
The pilot's alleged condition caused a delay in the departure of the aircraft. Transport Canada, the national regulatory body, formally notified Air India that the event represented a breach of both Canadian aviation regulations and the terms of the airline's foreign air operator permit.
In response, the regulators have instructed Air India to conduct a thorough, formal investigation into the circumstances. The airline must submit its findings in a report to Canadian authorities by 26 January.
