The Forbidden Corner: Yorkshire's Bizarre Maze Attraction Dubbed 'Strangest Place'
Nestled within the picturesque Yorkshire Dales lies what many visitors describe as the strangest place in the world - a unique family attraction that combines mysterious mazes, optical illusions, hidden tunnels and surprises around every corner. The Forbidden Corner, located near the charming village of Middleham, offers an experience unlike any other in the region.
A Labyrinth of Wonders
This expanding labyrinth of sculptures, architectural curiosities and visual tricks has become one of Yorkshire's most beloved destinations. What began as a private architectural folly has transformed into a completely unique theme park that invites families to lose themselves in the great outdoors. The attraction features numerous routes, passages and labyrinths scattered throughout its enigmatic gardens, creating an interactive adventure that captivates visitors of all ages.
The Forbidden Corner boasts an array of bizarre attractions including:
- An underworld temple that transports visitors to another realm
- A striking glass pyramid that catches the light in unexpected ways
- Sculptures representing numerous historical eras
- A magnificent castle tower with breathtaking stained glass windows
From Private Folly to Public Wonder
The attraction's history is as fascinating as its current offerings. Originally conceived as a private architectural project by Mr C. R. Armstrong CMG O. B. E., the site began its transformation in 1979 with the planting of hundreds of trees. By 1989, a modest tower had been constructed in the western section, providing stunning vantage points across what was once a peaceful, untouched garden.
In 1994, The Forbidden Corner was formally unveiled to the public, and it quickly developed its own unique character as the local community embraced this fresh and thrilling destination. The latest addition to the ever-growing attraction is that magnificent castle tower, complete with stained glass windows salvaged from a nearby building destined for demolition.
Visitor Experiences and Practical Information
Recent visitors have taken to review platforms to share their unique experiences, with one stating there is "nowhere else like it". Another delighted guest described their visit: "Every corner you turn has a surprise waiting. Big tip for all, every door opens, and they all have a little treasure/walkway/surprise behind them."
The attraction operates seasonally, opening from March 28 through to October 31, after which it's only open on Saturdays and Sundays until December 20. Visitors are strongly encouraged to reserve their spots in advance, as availability is limited and slots fill up rapidly.
Current ticket prices are set at £19 for adults, £17 for youngsters aged five and above, or £66 for a family of four. The attraction sits within a four-acre garden on the sprawling grounds of the picturesque Tupgill Park Estate, making it a haven for gardening enthusiasts as well as adventure seekers.
As the attraction's philosophy states: "Mother Nature is always around the corner at The Forbidden Corner" - and indeed, the gardens are teeming with wildlife, plants and vibrant floral displays that complement the man-made wonders.
