Wetherspoon's opens first Spanish pub at Alicante Airport

In a landmark move for the British hospitality giant, JD Wetherspoon has confirmed it will open its first-ever pub outside the United Kingdom. The new venue is set to launch at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport in Spain, marking the chain's inaugural foray onto foreign soil.

A Taste of Spain with a British Twist

The airport pub, to be named the Castell de Santa Bàrbara after a historic Alicante fortress, is scheduled to open its doors in January. Strategically located in the departure lounge, it will primarily cater to holidaymakers, particularly Britons, travelling home from the popular Costa Blanca region.

While the pub will feature Wetherspoon's classic menu items like all-day breakfasts, burgers, and pizzas, it will also introduce a local flavour. Traditional Spanish dishes such as garlic prawns and Spanish omelette will be available, offering travellers an authentic culinary experience before their flight.

In a significant detail for early morning travellers, the pub has secured a licence to serve alcohol from 6am daily. Food will be available up until one hour before closing.

Expansion Amidst Changing Tides

This European expansion comes directly from the chain's outspoken founder and chairman, Tim Martin, a prominent figure who vocally backed Britain's exit from the EU. Despite his Brexit advocacy, Martin is now steering the company towards growth on the continent.

The Alicante site will be a compact 93 square metres (1,000 sq ft), smaller than a tennis court, but will include an external terrace where customers can relax before their flight. This pilot project is expected to be the first of many, as Martin revealed plans to open a number of pubs overseas in the coming months and years, with a focus on airport locations and European holiday destinations like Mallorca.

A Strategic Move for the Pub Chain

This ambitious overseas push follows the company's announcement of slowing sales growth in the first 14 weeks of its financial year. However, the business, known for its consistent performance, still managed to increase sales by 3.7% during that period.

With over 800 pubs already established across the UK, this strategic expansion into mainland Europe represents a new chapter for Wetherspoon's, testing its brand's appeal in an international market and diversifying its revenue streams.
