Role Details and Compensation

The position is a part-year permanent role from April to the end of September each year, requiring 35 hours per week. The starting salary is £27,740 pro-rata, with additional benefits including enrolment in a Civil Service Pension scheme with a 28% employer contribution, 25 days of annual leave (increasing to 30 days after three years), and 11.5 public holidays. Successful applicants also receive reimbursement for relevant professional subscriptions, support for further education and personal development, study leave for work-related courses, flexible working hours where appropriate, and free entry to all Historic Environment Scotland properties (with up to three guests), as well as English and Welsh heritage properties.

Key Responsibilities

The Visitor Experience Assistant will welcome tourists and engage proactively in customer service, process and promote retail and admissions transactions using the till system, and maintain a high standard of presentation throughout the site. The role involves delivering guided tours and talks as part of the core visitor experience, working as part of a team to achieve quality assurance indicators, and actively supporting Historic Environment Scotland seminars, events, functions, and promotions. Additionally, the assistant will communicate with colleagues across the site to ensure high performance and consistency, support the Monument Manager on partnership and community engagement initiatives, and work with the monument team to achieve commercial performance targets. Promoting commercial opportunities such as upcoming events and retail products, assisting with stock management, and ensuring health and safety for staff, visitors, and contractors are also key duties.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants must have experience delivering high standards of customer service in a fast-paced environment, strong team-working skills, and cash handling experience or a willingness to undergo training. A genuine interest in working in the heritage tourism industry is essential. Other essential attributes include IT skills and the ability to use basic online functions. Desirable qualifications include knowledge of Iona Abbey and the surrounding area, previous experience communicating with large groups, and an existing first aid qualification.
