Bamburgh earned five stars for its beach, seafront, and scenery. Tynemouth matched that with five stars for its seafront and pier, as well as for food and drink. The North East dominated the top spots, with Whitley Bay also making the top 30, ranking in the high 20s. No North East locations appeared in the bottom 30.
Tynemouth's Beaches and Attractions
Tynemouth boasts two acclaimed beaches: King Edward's Bay and Longsands. Both have received national and international praise for their golden sand and water quality. One visitor described the beaches as “magnificent,” while another compared them to Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. The town's food scene also earned high marks, with visitors praising its “wonderful fish and chips.”
Cultural and Celebrity Endorsements
Tynemouth is currently hosting the Mouth of the Tyne festival, set against the backdrop of Tynemouth Priory. The event featured performances by The Ks and Ministry of Sound Classical. Music icon Sam Smith recently cited local chippy Marshall's as his favorite spot for fish and chips when visiting family in North Tyneside. Other notable fish and chip outlets include Longsands Kitchen and Oswin's, while Riley's Fish Shack near King Edward's Bay has been praised by celebrities such as Gary Barlow, Phil Spencer, and Rick Stein, who called it one of the UK's best hidden gems.
Regional Pride
The strong performance of North East seaside towns in the Which? rankings highlights the region's appeal. Tynemouth's rise from 12 months ago underscores its growing reputation as a top destination for beachgoers and food lovers alike.
