Tourist Faces Jail Time After Strolling Across Hot Lava in Hawaii
Tourist risks jail by walking on lava in Hawaii

A tourist in Hawaii has sparked outrage after being filmed walking across hardened lava near an active volcanic eruption—putting themselves at risk of severe injury and potential legal consequences.

The individual, whose identity remains unknown, was seen casually strolling over the unstable surface, ignoring clear warning signs and barriers. The footage, shared widely on social media, shows the person stepping just feet away from molten lava flowing from the Kilauea volcano.

Ignoring Danger for a Thrill

Authorities have repeatedly warned visitors to stay away from active lava flows, as the ground can collapse without warning, exposing individuals to extreme heat and toxic gases. Despite this, the tourist appeared unfazed, even stopping to take photos.

"This kind of reckless behaviour not only endangers the individual but also puts first responders at risk," said a spokesperson for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. "We cannot stress enough how dangerous this is."

Legal Consequences Loom

Walking on lava within the national park is strictly prohibited, and violators can face fines of up to $5,000 or even jail time. Officials are now investigating the incident and could press charges.

Local residents have expressed frustration, calling the act disrespectful to both nature and Hawaiian culture. "It’s not a playground—it’s sacred land," one commenter wrote online.

This isn’t the first time tourists have risked their lives for a photo op near lava flows. Earlier this year, another visitor suffered severe burns after venturing too close to an active eruption.

Experts urge travellers to respect safety guidelines and remember: no selfie is worth a life.
