Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a bid for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford as part of an ambitious £170 million squad overhaul, following two consecutive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League. The club narrowly avoided relegation last season under manager Roberto De Zerbi and is now looking to strengthen significantly in the summer transfer window.
Spurs' Transfer Activity So Far
Tottenham have already completed the signing of centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a £52 million deal. However, their pursuit of Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali hit a snag after an £80 million bid was rejected, with Newcastle valuing the Italy international at £100 million. Arsenal and Manchester United are also interested in Tonali.
The north London club is now turning its attention to improving its attack, with Rashford emerging as a primary target. According to The i, Spurs are ready to test Manchester United's resolve with an offer for the 28-year-old forward, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona.
Rashford's Situation at Manchester United
Manchester United have set an asking price of £40 million for Rashford, after Barcelona declined to trigger the £26 million purchase clause in his loan deal. Rashford contributed 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona last season. United are keen to resolve his future quickly to remove his substantial £315,000-a-week wages from their books, allowing them to reinforce their own squad.
However, Tottenham are reportedly unwilling to meet the £40 million asking price and plan to open negotiations with a lower bid. Additionally, Rashford's preference remains a permanent move to Barcelona, and he is reluctant to return to the Premier League. Barcelona's recent £69 million signing of England teammate Anthony Gordon has cast doubt on a move to the Camp Nou, potentially opening the door for Spurs.
Other Potential Suitors
Bayern Munich have also emerged as a possible destination for Rashford, but the German club is currently taking a watching brief. Bayern were beaten to the signing of Gordon by Barcelona and are in the market for a left-sided attacker, but they are reportedly prioritising a move for PSV's Ismael Saibari.
Rashford is currently focused on England's World Cup campaign, having scored in a 4-2 win over Croatia. He is competing with Gordon for a starting place in England's XI for their upcoming match against Ghana in Boston. United will be hoping his performances at the tournament will generate further transfer interest.
De Zerbi's Ambitions
Manager Roberto De Zerbi is keen to bring Rashford to Tottenham, viewing him as a key part of the squad rebuild. The club's hierarchy, under pressure after two poor seasons, is backing De Zerbi with significant funds to avoid another relegation battle.
While several factors—including Rashford's wage demands, his desire to join Barcelona, and Tottenham's valuation—could complicate a deal, Spurs are determined to pursue the England international as they look to transform their fortunes.
